Forever immortalized in the film Cool Runnings, the Jamaican bobsled team debuted at the 1988 Games Calgary Video. The crew of the Caribbean has become a part of the Olympic tradition, to be sure, but could crack our list of the most memorable moments of the Winter Games? Click through to find out.
10. Battle of Brians – Female skaters usually has a back seat back to their female counterparts. Not in 1988. In what grew to be identified since the Battle of the Brians, American Brian Boitano and Canadian Brian Orser, world champions each, crashed on the ice. Essentially tied into the completely free skate, Boitano landed eight triple jumps including two triple axles, and a triple-triple combination. Orser omitted planned second triple axel in his routine. The justices, by a narrow margin, gave the gold to Boitano.
9. Bonnie the Great – Bonnie Blair embodies everything that an Olympic athlete: humility, sportsmanship and excellence. From 1988-94, Blair owned sprint in speed skating. She won silver in the 500 and bronze in 1000 in Calgary at 88. Then swept races in each of the 92 games in Albertville, Video, and then again in Lillehammer in ’94. She was named ABC’s Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year in ’92 and was named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in ’94.
8. Controversy pairs figure skating – Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada was significantly altered after winning silver at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. With great reason. After placing second in the short program behind their Russian rivals, Sale and Pelletier gave a perfect performance in the long program, while the Russians had a minor slip however, notable-up. Incredibly, 5 judges still gave the money to Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. The crowd shouted missing. The broadcasters did not understand well. Immediately after the competition, the French judge admitted she had been forced to vote for the Russians. As a result, sale and Pelletier had been finally silver as well, and also the two couples share the Olympic title.
7. Perfection on ice – If the ice dance is on this list, you know that had to be spectacular. And that’s exactly what Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were. The British duo gave a concert for ages in the 1984 Winter Olympics. They began skating in that same first 18 seconds of music not to exceed the time limit for any program. In 1980 the Olympic Games Lake Placid, Heiden won gold in the careers of 5 males, distance sprints. He finished first in the 500 -, 1,000 -, 1,500 -, 5,000 – and 10,000 meter races. Set four Olympic records, which includes 1 world record. Not only is that the skater in fact only win 5 races in a single Olympics, which is the only skater ever to win five events at the Olympics.
4. Klammer going all out – Franz Klammer was a hero in Austria. A winner of 8 of 9 career World Cup downhill in 1975, Klammer took the ’76 Winter Olympics as the overwhelming favorite. Klammer was the last of the race favorite and defending Olympic champion Bernhard Russi had at one point that could not match one. The course was icy and treacherous. Up the steps of 22-year-old Klammer. With little regard for their own safety, Klammer flew down the hill, apparently on the brink of disaster at all times. The result? A blistering run which left him 33 seconds ahead of Russi and Olympic silver medal.
3. Dan Jansen finally wins gold – Dan Jansen was already the best speed skater in the world in 1988. He was the favorite in both the 500 and 1,000 meters races. Hours before the race, however, received the tragic news that his sister Jane died of leukemia. The two had been close. Jansen competed in every race, but fell in each, leaving Calgary without a medal. Four years later, in Albertville, Jansen, again listed as the favorite in each race. Once again came up empty-handed. In 1994, Jansen knew was his last chance Lillehammer Olympic silver. He had set the world record in the 500 in the many years between Albertville and Lillehammer, but finished 8th in the race. Within the 1,000 meters, his last chance for Olympic glory, Jansen finally won. He took a victory lap with his young daughter called, appropriately, Jane.
2. Nancy saga of Kerrigan and Tonya Harding – This would certainly be top of any list of most bizarre Olympic moments. On 6 January 1994, the figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was hit in the knee when an attacker opened a metal sticks it in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The attack proved that was orchestrated by the former husband of rival skater Tonya Harding. Kerrigan was in a position to skate in Lillehammer in ’94 when there was video games, and finished 2nd behind Russian figure skater Oksana Baiul. Harding, who was, incredibly, they participate in the Olympic Games, finished well back after falling through your program.
1. Miracle on Ice – Set in the context of the Cold War, the United States had in the team heavily favored Soviet Union ice hockey for men in 1980. It was supposed to be close. The Americans had been only children, amateurs in the true sense of the word. The Soviets had been men, having gone 5-3-1 against teams in the NHL exhibition game that year. But Herb Brooks’s boys “were not scared. Despite falling behind early, and put 3-2 in the final of the 2nd period, the U.S. team surprised his Soviet opponents 4-3 in one of the biggest upsets in sports background. Since the final seconds ticked down, announcer Al Michaels delivered possibly the most famous so-called reality, for any sporting event: “Do you believe in miracles? YES!”
